“In 2020 I started collecting natural earth pigments from the landscape in the region I grew up, North Devon. One of the pigments known a ‘Bideford Black’ was actually mined commercial for 200 years for the use of colouring rubber products, for camouflage on tanks in WW2 and also bought by Max Factor for use in mascara.

I’m not too sure what the impulse was but I wanted to take these raw pigments (hard rocks & wet clays) and try to make some marker pens with them, a pen is such a product but essentially just a stick of colour. From this I started to think about mark marking, graffiti tags, territory, geology, colour, landscape and camouflage. There seemed to be a lot of cross over (see diagram in slides).

Graffiti tags, in all intentions are a way of placing your name into the world. A way to notoriety and claiming your territory but ultimately due to their ubiquity blend into the background of the modern environment.

Roll on to late 2022 and I’m picking up these markers again and thinking this is something not destined for the gallery wall so I give Rob (Middle Distance) a shout. Rob and I went to uni together where he studied Fashion and I’ve always rated his approach to raw materials and narrative in his designs, so felt it was a natural fit.

Anyway so from all this Regional Camo #1 was developed. A two pigment camouflage, Bideford Black & Peppercombe Red, on a grey base. The two pigments both harvested from locations on the North Devon coast, 3 miles apart from each other. The final camo is a true expression of that location and the geology that lies there.” Jack Hirons, Margate, South East UK, 20th November 2024.

“This is intended as a guide for creating pigments from natural sources to generate new forms of place-based identification, and reinterpreting visual forms widely associated with camouflage prints. Attempting to subvert the martial origins of camouflage to emphasise it’s relationship with earthbound forms in a time of genocide and ecocide. The processes described here invoke a mimesis of nature intended to transform reality - we encourage the reader to think broadly on possible reinterpretations and applications of this process.” - Robert Newman, Carre, North East Italy, 22nd November 2024
