JOURNAL

The journal expands on, and contextualises the products we make and the ideas that inform them.

Each edition of the journal is sent in parallel with each product we release and then archived, accessible online and from every successive edition. For example, through sharing the Ursula K. Le Guin essay The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction in line with the release of the Pitcher Tote bag in ballistic Nylon / Cotton and 100% Kevlar, we wanted to offer a deeper understanding of what it is about making bags that we are interested in.

Talking with friends of the company, we realised that Middle Distance is far more about an exchange of ideas and thinking than anything else. We’re interested in how and why people make things for themselves and adapt them for their needs, so the process that leads to the object and its symbolic presence is the more exciting part for us. Perhaps we can imagine that each journal edition helps us to re-envision the meaning of the objects we live with and take for granted: the cap, the t-shirt, the belt, the socks.
