PATCH BAG 240.00 GBP

Patch bag, made from individual scraps of coated cotton canvas, tessellated together and zig-zag stitched, forming a new patchwork textile.

The design is derived from Native American deerskin bags, where the skinned, tanned hide of the animal was used whole without trimming, the final shape of the bag and strap echoing the shape of the animal itself.

The textile takes the same form of construction as a ‘clicker’ quilt - a rarely found type of quilt from the late 19th, and early 20th centuries, made from byproducts of the English footwear industry - ‘the clicker’, small pieces of scrap calico used to protect leather pieces from marking by the die-cutting machine, were quilted together in overlapping panels. The only known surviving example of this is now housed in Norfolk museum.

The bag is made from offcuts from the production of the vessel bag, stitched together with thick upholstery thread. Due to being a batch made piece, each is different, finished by hand and may carry some small marks from the production process.
